Understanding CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, often known as CBT, is a practical and structured form of talking therapy that focuses on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behaviours. When we feel stuck in certain patterns of thinking or reacting, life can become overwhelming.
CBT helps us recognise these patterns and find new, healthier ways of responding to life’s challenges.
At its core, CBT is based on the idea that how we interpret events — not just the events themselves — has a strong influence on how we feel and behave. By learning to identify unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, we can start to replace them with more balanced and realistic ones. This process can help to reduce distress and improve emotional wellbeing.
How I Work with CBT
I use CBT to help clients make meaningful changes in how they think and behave, with the aim of improving their overall quality of life. My approach is collaborative — we work together to understand what’s been happening for you, identify goals, and explore practical strategies that you can use in everyday life.
CBT is particularly effective for difficulties such as anxiety, depression, phobias, obsessive thoughts, low self-esteem, and stress. It is also widely recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a first-line treatment for a range of emotional and psychological difficulties.
In our sessions, we might explore your thought patterns through discussion, written exercises, or guided reflections. Between sessions, I often encourage clients to practise techniques or notice how new ways of thinking feel in daily life. This helps reinforce what we discuss in therapy and supports lasting change.
The Benefits of CBT
CBT is a goal-focused therapy, but it’s not about rushing towards quick fixes. It’s about gaining a clearer understanding of yourself and learning practical skills that can help you manage life’s challenges more effectively.
Many of my clients find that CBT not only helps them reduce specific symptoms but also builds resilience and confidence for the future.
I aim to make sessions relaxed and supportive, ensuring that you feel comfortable sharing your experiences at your own pace.
Together, we’ll find a way forward that feels achievable and grounded in what matters most to you.
